Doubling Your Reading Speed through These Speed Reading Techniques
The general idea behind speed-reading is to improve your ability to assimilate information at an increased rate. It is imperative to have a reading speed that is competent in an acceptable period of time. Unfortunately, many individuals who are forced to read on a constant basis and are battling in their professions, suffer from what is known as “information overload”. Through developing speed reading techniques you will be able to minimize this information overload and maximize your assimilation of information.
Taken time to practice the following and you should see radically improved results in your speed reading abilities.
One of the initial ways to start increasing your speed reading ability is to understand what information you need to absorb. This idea or concept is simply deciding what you want to extract from whatever it is you are reading. An example of this may be your efforts to read a document. Do you know what information you need from that document? Are you looking for all the information or just some key points? Obvious glee, there are many documents that are very detailed and will end in the initial stages require a slower reading approach. However, if you tend to ask yourself these two questions prior to starting any document. You will begin reading documents, with an approach of information that you need, and ultimately passed up unwanted information.
Observing your eye muscles ultimately reflects your reading pattern. You should notice that you are not reading individual words as you did sane kindergarten or the first grade, but that you are reading in blocks. It is important to know here if you find yourself reading a word by word. You will have major improvements to be made. Most individuals fix their eyes on a set of block text. This may be four or five words at a time or half a sentence. One of the shortcomings to overcome with speed-reading is what is called step back. This is when an individual has to go back over words that were read, because the information was not assimilated. If you're a poor reader the amount of time spent reading each block will be long. The amount of blocks or words in a block will be extremely small and will consume more time to read the same information.
With that said, if you are intending to double your reading speed you will need to determine how many words are in each blocks of text that you already read. You will then need to learn, to minimize the number of step backs and increase the number of words in each block of text.
One might to increase the amount of words contained in each set of blocks is through a pointer system. Simply use some type of pointing device to help you scan along the text. This trains your eye to follow the pattern of text and provides a bonus in allowing you to increase your reading speed by increasing the movement of the pointing device.
Although this sounds extremely difficult your ability to double your reading speed is a learned skill. Through patience time and dedication you should see a significant improvement over just the couple of week’s period. |
