We as individuals find ourselves bogged down with the pace at which today's high-tech delivery systems are able to present information. As individuals, we often cast aside stresses of everyday life in order to focus on and continue moving forward. This however may not be inaccurate and prosperous way to assimilate today's “information overload”. Experts believe and have even stated that to be considered functionally literate individuals should maintain a reading speed of no less than 400 wpm. Experts have also been able to show information overload, induced stress, all pointing to a need for individuals to acquire speed reading techniques.
It is unfortunate however that the majority of adults are only able to process some where in a range of 200 to 300 wpm. Although this is in an excellent reading speed it widens the gap between highly accomplished and well educated individuals with regards to functional literacy.
Functional literacy should be defined as an individual reading speed that keeps pace and is consistent with the flow and speed at which society presents and processes information. In order to narrow the gap individuals need to adopt speed reading techniques.
Speed reading is more than just assimilation of information in an increased manner. One of the basic techniques of speed reading is to teach the eyes to read larger blocks of information in a given amount of time. One of the easiest ways to accomplish this is to set reading material at a distance in which you can center on the page and read the page without having to move your eyes from side to side.
Another distinct advantage to speed-reading is according to experts. Many individuals are able to comprehend more information by speed reading than they normally would. This seems to be a result of the brain's ability to process information, much faster than we can currently read.
